Q: What are Adult Verification Services? How do they work?
A: Adult Verification Services (AVS) are systems on the Internet that assign adults a unique Identification Number (ID) which grants them access to thousands of adult-oriented web sites and allows them to view adult-oriented material. Such systems are designed to help prevent minors from accessing sexually oriented material, while still allowing adults the option to view such material. It is hoped that such self-regulation of the Internet will avoid future censorship and government intervention.

Here's how they work: whenever you enter a web site that utilizes an AVS, you enter the unique ID that was assigned to you. The service will then verify the ID against the database for that AVS. If the number is valid and current, it will automatically allow you into the site, otherwise it will give you an "Access Denied" page. Most AVS's use a secure server, so you can feel confident your ID not be compromised. [Top]

Q: How do I apply to an Adult Verification Service to get an ID?
A: Go back to the Age Verification page at this site and choose which AVS system you would like to join. Click on the appropriate link and you will be ferryed to the web site for the AVS you have chosen. Fill out the online application form. Once your application is submitted, your information and age is verified, and your credit card is charged the membership fee. Again, since most AVS's use secure servers, you should feel secure providing your credit card number. Once their database is updated, your AVS ID will then be e-mailed to you. [Top]

Q: I am an Adult but I don't have a Credit Card. How do I join?
A: If you are an adult and do not have a credit card, you can apply for an ID by mail. You will usually have to provide a copy of your birth certificate or passport. Just follow the instructions at the AVS. [Top]

Q: How do I know which Adult Verification Service to join?
A: Each AVS system is unique, and offers a variety of services.

Highly recommended is ManCheck - an exclusively gay AVS - which provides access to an extremely large number of excellent sites.  Membership is currently $19.95 USD per year (as of April 2004) for a whole year of access.

In addition, also highly recommended, United Gay Adult Sites is another exclusively gay AVS, and offers excellent access to over 23,000 gay sites. Membership is currently $19.95 USD (as of Apr 2004) for a full year of access. You can access a very large number of great gay sites.

New to this site (replacing AdultCheck for reasons listed below) is GlobalMalePass. They are exclusively gay and provide access to a lot of great websites!  Membership is currently $19.95 USD (as of Apr 2004) for a full year of access to a lot of fabulous gay sites. [Top]

Q: I applied for and received my ID, but it doesn't work. What's wrong?
A: By the time you receive your confirmation e-mail, your AVS ID should be functional. Most AVS do not mail out the ID until their databases have been updated. Ensure you are typing in the ID correctly - many ID's are case-sensitive, so you have to type it in exactly as it was provided to you. If this doesn't solve your problem, contact the applicable AVS (don't write me) - for their web addresses, see "How do I contact my AVS?" [Top]

Q: I keep getting a Server Error? What's wrong?
A: There are several possibilities, but here are the three most common ones:

First, one or more of the AVS's servers may be down or are being updated, so they are unable to respond to web requests. The solution to this one is to try again later.

Second, there may be a problem reaching the site on the Internet. The site's server may be slow or down, and so the site cannot respond to your request. The solution to this one is to try again later.

Last, your browser may be obsolete. It happens very rarely, but there is an easy solution. Simply download the latest release of the browser you are using, or use Microsoft Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape or Mozilla. [Top]

Q: At what other sites can I use my AVS ID?
A: Every AVS maintains a site list of their participating sites. Just go to their web page and look for a link to "Member Sites" or "Participating Links" or something like that. [Top]

Q: How do I contact my AVS?
A: You can reach the AVS's used at this site at the following URL's:

Q: What happened to AdultCheck?
A: Unfortunately, several months ago, AdultCheck decided to screw all the small webmasters who helped build their business when they gave us three days notice that they were changing their support model and would no longer be listing our sites or paying us for our memberships. If you have purchased an AdultCheck membership in the last year from this site, contact them and demand your money back.  If you maintain one, cancel it.
