Back to Who is Zak Spears? Page ZAK SPEARS LONDON 2002 TRIP DIARY

Zak travelled to London in the autumn of 2002 and decided to share his diary of his trip - in his own words:

Thursday November 28, 2002:

I went to Saint Pauls, C of E for Mass, Incredible experience sitting there and thinking about all the people that have come before me. The service was beautiful. Sat next to the American ambassador (no big deal I assure you) but all the same a nice guy. After I went for the tour of Tower Bridge, very cool, also went to the London Zoo. Saw the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace which is always fun. Rode on the London Eye again, it is great to see London from that vantage point. Had a late lunch at a great pub in the Harbour then walked across the Millennium Bridge, took the tour of the Tate Modern, amazing. After went to the Shakespeare Globe Theater for their tour then back across the bridge to the Tower of London. Went to the gym then to Clairidge's for full tea then home, cleaned up, and went to bed early. Jet lag you know.

Friday November 29, 2002:

Went back to Saint Pauls and toured the church due to it being closed the day before for services. Walked to the very top, once again it is so cool to see London from high above. Walking to the top made me feel huge; the stairwells in the upper areas are very narrow for someone like me so I had to walk sideways to get through. Drove around White Chapel just to see Jack's [the Ripper] old haunts, I have always been fascinated by the fact that his crimes went unsolved. Went to the Blind Beggar for a pint of Guinness, Reggie Kray whacked some guy in this pub some time ago. The Kray Bothers were a type of Mafia in London that dealt in extortion or "protection moneys". I then went to the Tower of London and took their tour. The beefeaters are always very animated and a great source of information. That went on for some time; I then went and had lunch with my friends. Afterwards I got ready to go to the theatre and see Maggie Smith and Judy Dench in "A Breath of Life", very good play, some very funny parts about Americans and their way of eating but most of it was dramatic.

Saturday November 30, 2002:

Called Wes, Chooseme and Jack [Internet friends] to arrange our lunch. Very nice to get to talk with them on the phone. Had a huge breakfast and set out for Harvey Nicks and Harrods. Basically I just shopped and looked around the area. Met the guys in front of Harvey Nicks and went over to a pub I knew of for lunch. It was really great to meet the guys in person. As I expected, very kind people and a lot of fun. I had a lot of fun and really didn't want to go but had plans later that afternoon. {Jack, I am very sorry that we couldn't meet up this time round - I will most likely be back in about 6 months maybe we can try again. We waited but there was no sign of you, I do hope we didn't just miss one another in passing. To Chooseme and Wes, thank you so very much, I had a great time and thank you also for the very thoughtful gifts. They are on display in my home as I type.} Finished my shopping and ended up at Hammley's Toy Store and went home, changed, and went to see "Bombay Dreams", Andrew Lloyd Weber's latest. Sorry, found it flat and boring, 4 good songs and not much visual. Then we went out for an amazing Italian meal that more than made up for the evening. Afterwards we went to the Rupert Street bar, Damn! there are some damn good looking men in London. I went to the local adult shop next door to see what videos they're allowed at this time to sell. As I was looking around and (as usual I never notice these things) people started staring and coming around. The manager came up to me and asked me if I was Zak, when I answered him I ended up (with pleasure of course, I was happy to do it) signing box covers, magazines, taking photos with the customers and so forth for almost two hours. It was so cute and the guys of course were so timid. It was fun hugging them just to see their reactions. LOL. I love doing the spontaneous things. I met John Hurt coming out of his play next to the bar. He is a very kind man and so sweet. I hung out at the bar for a while with friends and talked with their friends that they introduced me to. About 1 o'clock I went home, showered and went to sleep.

Sunday December 1, 2002:

Slept 'till 11:00 a.m. and got a late start. Went down to Vauxhall to see the Regiment Leather store. Nothing I haven't seen before but it did give me some very cool ideas and it was great to talk to all the people there. It was funny; I don't think that I have been approached so much in another city in my life. Everyday from the beginning people came up and they were so nice. It was very humbling not to mention flattering. I was told that London in just the past two years has eased off on its restrictions on adult movies - so I guess that is why this happened so much. I was sitting with five of my friends having tea at the Hume House, when I was finished I got up to put my coat on and 4 guys dressed in wedding tuxedos came up and timidly asked if I was Zak Spears. I was very surprised and for the first time in a long time it threw me off. Here I was in this very posh-looking place with everyone in suits and ties, myself included and I am signing autographs and chatting with people about screwing on camera. It definitely made me surprised because the last time I was in London this never happened, now it was happening everyday. LOL. I then went to Piccadilly to shop at Virgin and Tower records, they have CDs that you just can't get in the States. My friends and I had a casual dinner, then saw "Harry Potter" at the cinema, I really liked it. Oh, that reminds me, I saw "Die Another Day" before I left on my trip, it's great as long as you can get by yet another Madonna circuit queen song for the twinks to get stoned to and dance badly. No tradition held in respect for the movie's genre - but I would expect that from her. Anyway, HP was great and very fun, a little darker this time but I like that. Had a light dinner and off to bed.

Monday December 2, 2002:

Last full day in London. Had a huge breakfast and went to the Versace exhibit at the V-A, not my type of thing, but my friends wanted to see it. I got them back however, after that we walked across the street to the Science Museum; they had a very large and elaborate James Bond exhibit with all the bells and whistles. Very cool I thought. This lasted till about 4:00 p.m. Yup, you guessed it; we then went for tea at the Ritz. Afterwards I went home, showered up and put on my best navy blue Hugo Boss suit and once again the driver picks me up for the theatre. I saw "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". I'll tell you it was a lot of fun to see that on my last night in London. When it was over, the driver met us outside the theatre and drove us to the Ritz for drinks, a few Cohiba's, gambling in the casino and a late dinner in the private club. I don't know the last time that I ate so well and so much. It was the perfect topper to an incredible week.

Tuesday December 3, 2002:

Traveled home all day, by the half way point the flight crew had come out (literally) and we were having so much fun the time passed quickly. They really made the flight home an enjoyable and fast one. If you guys tune in, thank you so much for your kindnesses. Thanks again to Wes, Chooseme and all the great people that I met and associated with, you made the trip all the better by being there.
